Move two-factor to a new phone
Replace your authenticator without losing access during setup.
Before you start
Sign in using the old authenticator or an unused backup code. Have the new phone and its authenticator app ready.
Steps
- Open Account > Security.
- Under Two-factor, choose Move to a new phone.
- Complete the security confirmation.
- Scan the new setup QR code with the authenticator app on your new phone. If scanning is unavailable, enter the displayed setup key instead.
- Enter the code generated on the new phone.
- Choose Move two-factor.
- Save the new backup codes shown after the move.
What happens next
The old authenticator keeps working until you confirm the first code from the new one. Once the move finishes, the old authenticator stops working, other sessions are signed out, remembered devices are forgotten and backup codes are replaced.
Check the success message before removing the old authenticator entry.
If the new code does not work
Check that you scanned the current setup code and that the new phone sets its time automatically. Enter the newest code. If you cannot sign in to start this process, use account recovery.
